“I was in my early 40s living a healthy and active life when I began to feel tired, developed bad allergies and started to get swelling in my joints. Shortly after, a routine doctor’s visit determined that my kidneys weren’t working well and I was referred to a specialist who, after a biopsy, informed me that I had an autoimmune disease called IGA nephropathy. With medication and routine check ups, I was doing well, and my kidneys were stable. Three years after my diagnosis, I became sick — I was tested for covid and told it could be dehydration. After weeks of not being able to eat or drink much, I went to emergency, where I was told my kidneys had failed and I would need to start hemodialysis right away until I could find a donor kidney.

I was put on the transplant list, which had an average wait time of five years, and friends and family began submitting their applications for donation. Luckily, they quickly chose my partner, Mireille, as a viable candidate to test for a match. She used to joke that she was keeping her kidneys warm for me — we never thought I’d need one so soon, if ever.

As I sat on dialysis three days every week for four hours at a time, we both began the long and thorough testing process. After 11 months, we got the news that we were a match and on July 21, 2021 I got her left kidney.

I’m so grateful for the nurses, doctors and dialysis staff that supported us through this journey. And I’m especially grateful to Mireille for not just saving my life, but for being a caregiver and support for me every day, in every way. She is the true rockstar.”  Trevor “Stickman” Stickel
